Co-Founder and CEO
Spade
Oban MacTavish is a co-founder and CEO at Spade, the fastest and most accurate provider of real-time merchant intelligence for the card ecosystem. From a young age, Oban was interested in the finance industry, starting out as a teenage investor during his high school years, a hobby that continued throughout his studies at the University of British Columbia. Immediately after his college graduation, he founded the financial advisement platform Hubly, where he focused on strategically building distribution agreements with multinational tax filers and insurance companies. The launch of Hubly also marked the start of a series of successful startup ventures for Oban, his cofounder and longtime friend Cooper Hart, who served as the first engineering hire at Hubly and now holds the CTO title at Spade, and Tess Bloch. Changing course during the pandemic, Oban left Hubly to begin consulting for fintech companies, and it was during this time he became exposed to just how many challenges exist within the financial data sector, particularly merchant transaction data. As Spade’s CEO Oban has led the company’s strategy since inception, guiding Spade through its Y Combinator participation and fundraising efforts, with its most recent Series A led by Flourish Ventures. Outside of building Spade, Oban loves to run and to try new recipes in the kitchen.
The explosive growth of embedded finance globally confirms a radical shift by consumers and businesses to financial services that are instant, convenient and tailored to meet their individual needs, particularly around payments and lending. The vast opportunities to create new distribution channels, reduce customer acquisition costs and increase revenue streams for banks, however, are not without risks. Operational models can be complex and regulatory liability is mounting, with increasing pressure for sponsor banks to manage risks tied to Know-Your-Customer and anti-money-laundering requirements across partnerships with Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) providers and end brands.
